Great job on your review. I have used the printed version of Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory in my classes before, and I was very eager to learn about the software that goes with it. It sounds like a great resource to get junior high and high school students introduced to different concepts of music theory as well as ear training.
I was very interested to hear what you had to say about Alfred's Essentials of Music. I did not have a very favorable opinion of the software when I was first introduced to it. However, I did spent a 4 hour inservice with all the band directors from our school system looking at the software which might have skewed my view of this program slightly. I have used the accompanying workbook from this software to provide students with exrta practice on certian topics in my band classes though. I should probably go back and revisit this software to learn more about its capabilities.
Hi Susan, Great review! I reviewed another one of Alfred's software and was curious to see how they compared. This version seemed a little older than the one I evaluated but appeared to give another approach. This program would be great for my elemnetary studetns. Thanks, Laurie
Great Review of the software. It seems straight forward and easy to understand like you said. I can see it being used in younger grades or maybe even in middle school as a reinforcer for some students.
I really liked that you said instructions are written and spoken so it really can adhere to different learning styles. Nice job!
I enjoyed your review. I have used this program with my students and found it to be very helpful. I agree that it is extremely easy for students to complete each lesson on their own and progress at a rate that is good for them. The reviews are excellent. It is excellent for my jr. high students. Great job! Diana
It is great that the software is compatible with pc and mac. Some classrooms have both. It sounds like a good piece of software. I like the ear training at the end of the lessons idea. Good job.
Susan, Nice work. I had used a demo version of Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory in the past. I was not aware that it was this involved. Your handout and explanation was concise and easy to follow. I think that this would be a great program to get the ball rolling with music theory for the middle school student. Great job.
Susan, Nice job on your presentation and evaluation. Although I have heard of this program I have not used this before. It sounds like a very easy and user friendly program. This is always nice especially at the elementary and junior high levels. Good job.

I have been directing bands for 20 years. My BA is from San Diego State University (GO AZTECS!) and am currently working on my ME at Auburn University (WAR EAGLE!).
My short-term goal is to become a better teacher for my kids and eventually to end up teaching in a university setting.
I teach grades 5 through 12 at Goldthwaite Independent School District and have for the past 11 years. My classes are the 5th grade recorder class, 6th grade beginning band, 7th grade band, high school band and applied music. Currently, there are just short of 200 students enrolled in my program.
I play French Horn as my primary instrument, but have managed through the years to pick up enough skill on the other instruments in the band to stay ahead of my middle school students, and most of my high school students. Percussion, however, remains a mystery to me.
